Group donates $25,000 to The Christmas Room
Lake Huron Physician Hospital Organization, part of Lake Huron Medical Center in Port Huron, recently announced it has donated $25,000 to The Christmas Room, a local nonprofit organization dedicated to spreading holiday cheer to families in need.
The Christmas Room is known for its dedication to providing toys, jackets, boots, bedding, clothing and other essential items to disadvantaged children and their families.
“We are thrilled to support The Christmas Room and contribute to the welfare of our community,” Lake Huron PHO Quality Coordinator Amber Garza said in a news release.
Representatives expressed their gratitude for the contribution, which was made possible through an incentive received from Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan as part of its Social Risk Adjustment Incentive Program.
“We are incredibly thankful for the support from Lake Huron PHO, Lake Huron Medical Center and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan,” The Christmas Room Founder Robin Grace-Hanrahan said in the release. “This donation will enable us to brighten the holiday season for many, many families in need and bring smiles to the faces of deserving children. We not only serve children in need, but veterans, disabled and those families that survive from week to week and can’t afford the extras. Each recipient is interviewed to address what their individual needs are, and we fill in the rest.”
The Social Risk Adjustment Incentive Program, an opt-in initiative, uses the area deprivation index in conjunction with each participating organization’s attributed BCBSM membership to identify the volume of patients residing in the area. This approach ensures that health care providers are equipped to address the unique needs and challenges faced by individuals in underserved communities. The funds are to be designated to support housing instability, food insecurity, material hardship, health literacy and several other usage categories to improve outcomes in the community.
“Thanks to BCBSM, we were able to participate in this incentive and make this donation,” Garza said. “It was an incredible way to demonstrate our commitment to enhancing the lives of people and families in our community who are dealing with social and economic difficulties, particularly during this holiday season.”
“Lake Huron Medical Center and Lake Huron PHO have always been committed to enhancing the wellbeing of the communities they serve,” hospital officials added. “This donation to The Christmas Room aligns with their mission to uplift and support local families, particularly during the holiday season. By partnering with Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Michigan, they can extend their impact and make a significant difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
